It is obvious to say that 2018 was a very remarkable year in the Nigerian music industry as it saw the rise to global recognition of existing artistes like Burna Boy, Wizkid and the likes and also saw the emergence of new talent
These artists to watch out for in the New Year, have unique sounds and special methods of delivery during performances. A lot of them have relatively large fan bases due to social media and their online presence.
Here is our list of the next rated Nigerian artistes to watch out for in 2019;
Akumefule Chukwu-Emeka George, popularly known as BlaqBonez is a Nigerian rapper, popular for winning Terry Tha Rapman Zombie Competition. Blaqbonez isn’t only a great rapper, he’s actually part of the new wave. He does trap and writes amazing bars. He’s one of the most promising rap acts in the underground scene currently.
Blaqbonez won the Tosinadeda’s radio palmwine’s, in 2015 alone, was 1st Runner up in vector’s king kong competition. He won the Rhythm Fm Freestyle Fury and became Rhythm Fm’s artist of the month.
He also has alter egos named President Emeka and Rasaki, which he uses to rap in English and Yoruba Respectively. He also made the list of 5 Rappers on the hiphop radar in 2016 by Talkglitz and also Ten rappers to watch out for in africa by opinion polls.
He released his latest album “Boy Boy Blaq” and he said in an interview with Pulse that “the love for the album has been organic.”
2018 was a very active year for the artiste as it saw him further rise and solidify his status as a rapper with content, his album was highlighted by Soundcity as album of the year alongside Burna Boy’s “YE” and M.I’s “Rendevouz” among others.

Teniola Apata is a Nigerian singer, songwriter, drummer and rapper better known as Teni, Teni the entertainer or Teni Makanaki.
Teni’s entry into the music scene started in 2016 with covers, freestyles and comedy that quickly garnered likes from Instagram followers. By the time she released her first commercial freestyle, Boluwatife, Teni had stamped her name among fast-rising stars in the music industry.
She is a rare talent, a one-woman show that dazzles at every opportunity. Delivering her music in a mix of Fuji and Highlife with a splash of pop to create a perfect mix, Teni scales up on the list of artists that you can’t help but really love.
2018 proved to be a defining year for the artiste whose clothing consists of du-rag, loose clothing, bubbly personality and shades which are in contrast to her thrilling voice.
She bagged the award for the Rookie of the Year at the 2018 Headies Award, and her single, ‘Askamaya’ is gradually becoming one of the biggest anthems for 2018, while ‘Fake Jersey’ also made the rounds especially during the World Cup.

Odunsi The Engine
Odunsi Bowo best known as Odunsi, The Engine, is a budding recording artiste, songwriter and producer. He was recently signed to an international music company, Universal Music, alongside two other youngsters, Tar Iwar and Lady Donli.
Odunsi the Engine is at the forefront of a new sound that blends genres into what he calls Afro-fusion. He’s been making music since he was in primary school. Odunsi the Engine has production credits on several songs from a younger generation of Nigerian artists.
He released his first EP ‘Time of Our Lives’ (T.O.O.L) in August 2016. His work is now at the top of many ‘fresh out of Africa’ listings across various platforms including Apple Music, MTV base and Sound Cloud.
2018 was a very active year for Odunsi as it saw the release of his first studio album titled “rare.” Which featured artists like Davido, Santi, Runtown, Nasty C and more, his debut on the runway at Lagos Fashion Week where he walked for Orange Culture, his first sold-out show which had performances from Olu Maintain, Mr Eazi, Santi, SDC among others, he equally performed at major shows and concerts like The BBK homecoming concert in April which featured the likes of Skepta, nasty C, Naomi Campbell, Wizkid, Tiwa Savage, Davido and many more.
2019 is bound to be a great year for him
Prettyboy, D-O ,is an AfroUrban songwriter and recording artist with a unique worldwide sound. Hailing from Rivers state, Southern Nigeria , Donald Ofik ( aka D-O) spent most of his early life in Lagos state , Western Nigeria. Due to his education; D-O lived in various places throughout his adolescent years
D-O fell in love with music at an early age . He started writing songs when he first got into Secondary school .His PrettyBoy sound is a fusion of R&B andRap, laced with dancehall and African melodies thanks to his African upbringing. He released his first track while he was still in University.
The artiste had an exciting 2018 as he released his first album titled “Everything Pretty” which featured artistes like Falz, Santi and Sugarbana, he made his runway debut at Lagos Fashion Week, he headlined his very own concert “Pretty World” which featured performances from Kida Kudz and Wani, he modelled for Influence Gallery’s (I.N) F/W ’17 collection designed by Ifeanyi Nwune, he performed at the Nativeland 2018 concert along with Skepta, Wizkid, SDC and a host of others and he also performed at Burna Boy’s sold out show “Burna Live”.

Santi also known as Ozzy B was born Osayaba Ize-Iyamu. He is an alternative singer, rapper, song writer and filmmaker who combines different genres of music to produce his unique sound. At a young age he developed a passion for music after listening to his dad’s old records and he went into music professionally at the age of 16 and he dropped a mixtape in July 2011, which was well received and was highly rated as one of the best mixtapes ever in Nigeria.
2018 was quite the year for Santi as he released the visuals for his much-anticipated song “Freaky” which premiered on The Fader, he performed alongside industry movers and shakers like Wizkid, Davido, Not3s and a host others at the BBK homecoming concert, he featured on multiple singles and albums including Odunsi’s album “rare.”, releasing his music on Drake’s platform “OVO SOUND”, he ended the year by performing at the Nativeland concert where the crowd went wild as he performed his latest single “Rapid Fire”.
Santi recently announced via his twitter account that his album would be out early 2019 and we are super excited.
For a rapper in an industry that is considered saturated, Chukwuebuka Dusten Anyasie, aka Dusten Truce, is bringing something new to the table. D-Truce is a recording and performing artist from Lagos Nigeria. He’s got multiple releases and features dating back to 2012 under his belt, and he’s continuously working on crafting his distinct sound.
He’s also an advertising creative and he’s dabbled into a bit of acting, featuring on Africa’s biggest soap opera “Tinsel” as a supporting character.
In 2018 D-Truce and TylerRiddim released an EP titled “Back Bencher volume 1” They came together to create a unique blend of Afro-fusion and Hip Hop, on the 5 song EP produced by DJ Xtreme and Jay Blakez.
D-Truce is releasing his anticipated album in January 2019 and we’re eager to listen to it. The video to the popular song on the back benchers EP is also coming out January 2019. 2019 looks like it’s about to be an exceptional year for D-Truce.
Buju originally named Daniel Benson, is a fast-rising 21-year-old Nigerian Afro-Fusion singer and who draws inspiration to create music ranging from his personal experiences, his environment or the experiences of his friends. His ability to tell stories effortlessly in his music whilst including vivid melodies and harmony is something that has made his music a ‘must-listen’ as it’s unexplainably enjoyable.
Buju lit up stages all 2018 in multiple locations and his track ‘A day in Lagos’ was a fan favourite as it was very relatable especially for Lagosians as he spoke about the hassles during the day and highlighted the glamourous Nighlife scene.His music is very descriptive as he tries to take listeners on a Journey for however long the song lasts. When you plug in your headphones, close your eyes and listen, you almost feel like you’re in the setting or situation he’s describing.
Buju (Beauty Underneath Just Understood) is most definitely an artiste to watch in the years to come as he is believed to have ‘just what the world needs to listen to’ and it is evident in his music.
Wavy The Creator
Jennifer Ejoke popularly known as Wavy The Creator is a Nigerian millennial fast gaining nationwide popularity for her multifaceted, creative ingenuity. In addition to her music artistry, Wavy is also a photographer, filmmaker, creative director, fashion designer and founder of A Wavy Film, a content production outfit and AZIF, a fashion line that has clothed international superstars like D’Banj. The self-taught virtuoso has photographed many Nigerian celebrities including Olamide, M.I., Runtown, Lil Kesh, Adekunle Gold, Phyno, and Yung6ix, to name a few.
Last year was quite eventful for the artiste as it saw her gain the attention of both domestic and international media agencies including NativeMag and Vogue, she released visuals for her much anticipated single “Stay” and the feedback was overwhelmingly positive, she opened for Skepta’s BBK crew, which consists of British M.C. J Hus and afrobeat stars Wizkid and Davido, for their homecoming concert among other achievements.
We are eager to see what the future holds for her as she has hinted joint and solo projects.
Oluwafemi Oladapo Oke-Eko who is popularly known by his stage name Slimcase is a Nigerian recording artist and songwriter. The young man was born in Ikorodu area of Lagos state on the 22nd of August 1982. The buzzing Lagosian also grew up in Ikorodu. His foray into the music scene started in 2013 and he is still growing stronger on a daily.
Otunba Lamba as fondly called, brought his unique style of Wobe sound to cut across the country with many music lovers already appreciating it. With this new style, everyone began to adopt the Shaku Shaku trend with more hit songs like Idowest’s “Omo Shepeteri” and Mr Real’s “Legbebge”.
He has features on the following tracks; Oshozondi, Omo Shepeteri, Lavish, Issa Banger, Codeine Diet, Shakpati, Shempe, Gucci Snake, Malowa and Maro. He has been nominated for the prestigious Headies award in the year 2018 and has won the Nigerian Hype award for Best street act 2018. We care excited to see what he’s going to do in 2019.
Funbi is a solo singer based in Nigeria. He is also a member of a music ensemble called The Collectiv3. Funbi is a male vocalist best pioneering the new school rhythm in Nigeria – a soul singer and storyteller whose essence captures the past, highlights the present, and sets the standard for the next generation of Afrobeat sounds. On November 24th, Funbi released his first debut project, a full length EP titled “Serenade”, the EP is said to be a mixture of funk, afrobeat, folk, and alternative music, and has him singing about the women in his life, weaving in and out of love in every song, from sensual, to genuine, adventurous and deeply touching. Funbi is, at his best, a versatile singer and storyteller whose essence captures the new Nigerian sound: drawing from the past, highlighting the present, and pushing the boundaries for the future of unconfined African music.
Tobechukwu Victor Okoh with the stage name Peruzzi, is a Nigerian singer, songwriter and performer signed under the Davido Music Worldwide record label but formerly signed to GoldenBoy Entertainment. He is an Urban Afro Vibe and recording artiste who started singing at the age of 7. Peruzzi came to limelight with the single “For Your Pocket” featuring LK Kuddy as produced by Speroach Beatz in July 2017. His talent and unique voice caught the attention of Davido and was immediately signed in November 2017 into Davido Music Worldwide (DMW). With his ability to flow any beat, Peruzzi is second to none as he has been the mastermind of DMW’s hit singles such as Aje and Mind. His feature in the song “Amaka” by 2baba further gave him a boost. Peruzzi is truly a force to reckon with in the music industry.
