Hot Girls vs City Boys started back in May when rapper Megan Thee Stallion released the album Fever. On the album’s cover, Stallion says it’s “exclusively for THEE HOTTIES” and “REAL HOT GIRL SH!T”. This lead to fans declaring 2019 to be “Hot Girl Summer”. The phrase became a meme and blew up on Twitter.
Even brands started joining in on the meme
Hot Girl Summer doesn’t even have to be about physical beauty. Some women are having Hot Girl Summers by kicking ass at their job or generally taking care of themselves.
You don’t even have to be a girl to participate. As Stallion said in an interview; Hot Girl Summer is for everyone. “So it’s just basically about women and men being unapologetically them,” she said “just having a good-ass time, hyping up your friends, doing you, not giving a damn about what nobody gotta say about it,”
City Boy Summer, also known as “Hot Boy Summer* is a male-centric counterpart to Hot Girl Summer, though it seems like where Hot Girl Summer tends to celebrate female solidarity and good looks, City Boy Summer tends to focus on men acting mean-spiritedly towards women, particularly ones they are dating or seeing socially.
The term “City Boyz” was supposed to show men having a good time but instead, it looks like they created a competition where there was none and declared themselves the winner. In practice, City Boy Summer began to take on a mean-spirited connotation, as it was used to celebrate examples of men one-upping women.
The problem with “City Boyz” is that it doesn’t look like it’s about having a good time, it’s about ruining other people’s good time. Luckily, Megan Thee Stallion jumped in again to remind us what “Hot Girl Summer” is supposed to be all about.
So after this long talk, all we have to say to you is, go out and have a great time this summer, be yourself, do your own thing.
