US open: We are yet to see the last of Serena Williams

In a black and diamond ensemble, Serena Williams entered the arena. After a 27-year career that comprised 23 Grand Slam victories, she was (justly) introduced as the greatest of all time (G.O.A.T. ), and this could be her final-ever singles tennis match.

She defeated Daria Kovinic in the opening point, served two double faults, and then delivered an unforced long forehand. Williams won game one thanks to two aces to save and a Kovinic unforced error.

The next three games were won by Kovinic as Williams’ first serve success rate fell below 30%. The 23,000-person Arthur Ashe Stadium crowd booed loudly at each missed shot as the former world number one made an additional 10 unforced errors and four double faults.

Bill Clinton, the former president of the United States, Mike Tyson, Martina Navratilova, and Spike Lee were among the famous people in that gathering. Following a fortunate sixth game in which Williams leveled the opening set at 3-3, she played with more rhythm and defeated Kovinic to love in the seventh game.

She needed aces to remain in the game after breaking Kovinic in the eighth game to serve for the match, but she held to win the set 6-3 in 55 minutes.

After two deuces, Williams lost the opening game of the second set. She instantly fought back and finished the second game with an ace. With an ace, Kovinic took the third game. Kovinic required a change of clothes as the players’ sweat dripped off them in New York’s oppressive humidity.

Kovinic won the fifth game, but Williams held serve to love. Williams kept getting better as the match went on, and after the seventh game, it was cruise control. In the ninth game, she broke Kovinic to win in an hour and 39 minutes. Williams earned a match against Anna Kontaveit in the second round by doing the renowned pirouette once more.

The featured interviewer, Gayle King, discussed how Williams “changed the game in so many ways.”

Serena Williams’ favorite color is pink, which is why the legendary Billie Jean King was on the court wearing it. Billie Jean King continued the praise, “Her serve is the most beautiful serve in the history of our sport.”
