Oyo deputy governor Rauf Olaniyan impeached

Rauf Olaniyan, the Oyo deputy governor, has been impeached by the Oyo State House of Assembly. On Monday, the MPs impeached Olaniyan on grounds of alleged misbehavior. The judgment was made following the presentation and consideration of the seven-person panel’s recommendation that the Deputy Governor be looked into for charges of gross misconduct and abuse of authority by the Chief Judge, Munta Abimbola.

According to the assembly, the impeachment is effective immediately.

The majority leader of the house, Hon. Sanjo Adedoyin, submitted the committee’s findings during Monday’s plenary, and it states that the seven-member panel found the Deputy Governor guilty of all charges brought against him.

The panel’s recommendations were approved by all 23 PDP members present at the session.

The team of investigators was established last week to look into at least five claims made in a petition against Olaniyan.

Olaniyan and Governor Seyi Makinde were both elected to government in 2019 on the PDP platform, but over time, the two became estranged from one another.

When the Oyo Deputy Governor left the PDP for the All Progressives Congress this year, their differences and working relationship become more pronounced and nearly unbridgeable.
