ALBUM REVIEW: Adekunle Gold’s Catch Me If You Can

Adekunle Gold’s music career took a new shape two years ago. From blending local highlife and incorporating Afrobeats to make his unique blend of pop sounds which also reflects the culture in which he was raised.

AG Baby has been able achieve success with it across different demographics – from both urban listeners as well suburbanites alike. Afro-pop vol. 1 in 2020 was that turning point where he transitioned into more of a popstar and laid down the foundation showing how versatile and talented he is.

The anticipation for this new project had been killing fans since last year, and he’s finally released this new album. It featured his previously released hit singles “High” “It is what it is” and “Mercy” all of which set the tone for what to expect from the full length project.

The first officiating moments of “Catch Me If You Can” successfully walk AG Baby into the United Kingdom streets for pedestrians and drivers to behold on a Billboards. The LP peaked on YouTube Music within 24 hours and this just goes further to serve as a testament to how much he has been on a winning streak.

Adekunle Gold’s features on “CMIYC” are not just outstanding and it’s evident that he strategically planned them that way to create an entertaining listening experience for his audience. Local features like Davido & a cameo from Simi and also international features from Fatoumata Diawara, Ty Dolla $ign, Stefflon Don, Foushee and Lucky Daye.

“Born Again” is a catchy entertaining opener that gives you an idea of what’s to come on the rest of this album. The vocals are strong and raw with some African flair added in for good measure thanks to Fatoumata Diawara who adds her local dialect from Mali while singing throughout; it sets up expectations for the rest of the album.

On “Win” his voice weaves through the cadences of pop, giving thanks to his Mama who raised a young king. He also claims himself as someone that is winning and calls it an everyday thing even though he doesn’t underestimate how sweetly successful you can be in life if your mind stays focused on what really matters most-you.

Ty Dolla $ign shined on “One Woman” the track is exceptional as it drives through waves of love while being built around Afrobeats and pop fusion; Ty’s rap eloquence blends right into this flow which gave a little idea how well he might be mixing up with our culture when he mentioned trying out out local dishes here in on of his bars.

The album explores an intermission of grooves with“Mercy” “Sinner” alongside “High”, which featured Davido. Mercy isn’t just plow backbeat but it comes with a strong message and is more personal to his career run carrying our perspective too – just like It Is What It Is. Some other notable tracks were “Selah” with great melody and progressiveness, “FYE” with Stefflon Don and Dior, Dior, Dior.

“Catch Me If You Can” is the end of album that becomes more personal than ever x-raying various circumstances AG Baby is going through. He understands his music, in high demand as he endlessly races towards light calls himself man and says you should catch him if possible–this includes all aspects about being an artist from capturing their essence on paper or sound waves with songs we know by heart – but also what they entail beyond just words; how each one touches our souls differently depending upon where/when heard (or read).

This album is the perfect conclusion to Adekunle Gold’s transitioning into a popstar. It gives him clarity and confidence, which he can use for more success in his career moves!
